What is a Regional Electricity Distributor (RED)?
A RED is a legal entity which is tasked with the supply and distribution of
electricity in a dedicated region,
combining the electricity distribution
departments of the Local Authorities,
Regional Councils and NamPower.
2. Whose Initiative is the REDs?
Within the context of Government’s
National Development Plan, the
Ministry of Mines and Energy has
formulated an Energy Policy White
Paper which, amongst others, provides
for the reorganization of the electricity
distribution industry through the
formation of REDs as a means of
improving service delivery and
efficiency in the electricity sector.
3. Why REDs?
Through the formation of REDs, the
supply and distribution of electricity will
be done in a more efficient manner
which will ultimately benefit the endusers.
4. What is Erongo RED?
In line with the above-mentioned policy
a company called the Erongo
Regional Electricity Distributor
Company (PTY) Ltd (Erongo RED)
has been established to undertake the
supply and distribution of electricity in
the Erongo Region.

5. How will the Erongo RED manage the
transition from the Local Authorities?
For customers previously supplied by
NamPower, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay,
the Erongo RED has contracted these local
authorities/suppliers to continue providing
this service.
For the other regions of Erongo RED the
physical addresses for new pay points,
electricity applications and queries as
from March 2006 are below:

Uis - Erf 246, Bo Dorp. 6. Where do I pay my electricity account?
Electricity payment and purchases are done at the various Erongo RED offices and pay points.
7. Direct Banking and Internet Banking
Direct Banking can only be done for the

8. Cut-offs
After the due date, due dates (normally by
the 15th of each month, but if the 15th falls on
a weekend then the following working day)
might differ every month but will be clearly
indicated on account statement.
9. Electricity tariffsWith the increase in NamPower
transmission tariffs the Erongo RED will
need to adjust its tariffs in order to absorb
these and other costs. These adjustments
will communicated ahead of time with
customers
Erongo RED intends to harmonise the
electricity tariffs over a number of years as
tariffs approach cost reflectivity throughout
the region.
