Addressing Social Issues
17 April 2008

A 27-member delegation representing different church denominations in Botswana paid a brief courtesy call on the mayor of Walvis Bay, as part of a fact finding mission on the programmes and projects involving street children and other social problems.

Welcoming the delegation, mayor Derek Klazen noted that Namibia values its friendship with Botswana. ”We are delighted to work hand in hand with Botswana, especially to improve the welfare of our people, to promote joint ventures and to help each other achieve political and municipal goals.”

The leader of the group Pastor Maripe expressed his interest in the programmes aimed at addressing drug and alcohol abuse, corruption, crime and HIV/AIDS in Walvis Bay. “Our visit is mainly focussed on sharing knowledge, skills and experiences. We would like to learn from you how you have addressed poverty, unemployment and welfare issues so far.”

Pastor Mutheto noted that one of the aspects of Namibia that impressed him the most was the cleanliness of towns, beaches and highways.

“In Botswana many roads are not in a good condition, but here it seems that we are driving on luxury. As an educator it is heartening to see that your government has gone to great lengths to develop the educational sector. Botswana gained its independence before Namibia, but it seems that Namibia is outperforming Botswana in terms of education and development. Therefore we would like to learn from Namibians what it is that they are doing right.”
