"In mounting campaigns of this nature we are not only making sure that our environment is clean and free from pollution and littering, but we are also increasing the scenic beauty of our city, making it attractive to tourists and through their impressions create a good reputation around the world of being a very clean city."
This was said by the mayor of Walvis Bay, Uilika Nambahu during the road clean-up campaign and Arbour Week celebrations on Saturday, 13 September 2008. The clean-up campaign was organised jointly by the Municipality of Walvis Bay and Metcalfe Legal Practitioners. The mayor noted that by planting trees, inhabitants of Walvis Bay can change the perception that there is no life in the desert.
"We should therefore encourage efforts aimed at making living in the desert possible amongst both young and old in order to increase environmental awareness towards the sustainable utilisation of natural resources. Trees are a great source of life and their presence further provides proof of life. I am pleased that the Road Clean-Up Campaign and Arbour Week Celebration served as a great vehicle through which to increase awareness for environmental management, preservation and protection," she said.
Nambahu furthermore encouraged other corporate players to join in by shouldering this and similar initiatives with similar objectives. Apart from the staff members of the legal firm and the municipality, about 50 youngsters took part in the operation and collected more than 150 refuse bags full of waste along the entrance road of Walvis Bay. The group consisted of Junior Council members, as well as youth from the Multi-Purpose Centre and the Sunshine Centre.
Speaking at the occasion, legal practitioner Richard Metcalfe urged other businesses to plough back into the community by supporting similar events that will benefit the city and its inhabitants. "With the success of this clean-up campaign we intend holding another few during the next few months to clean other areas in Walvis Bay. We would like to see other companies come on board to support events like these."
As part of the Arbour Week celebrations the mayor and Metcalfe planted the first of ten new palm trees lining the entrance to Walvis Bay.
