Keep vacant Erven tidy
23 September 2008

The Municipality of Walvis Bay has noted with concern that dumping of household refuse and other material on vacant erven has increased alarmingly over the years. The trend has been observed throughout Walvis Bay. In the interests of public hygiene and health standards, the Municipality has taken on the burden of cleaning these erven. However, the Municipal Council regards this as an unfair practice because the ratepayers of Walvis Bay have been footing the bill for such operations.

The responsibility of keeping property tidy and clean, whether such property is developed or not, rests entirely with property owners. In future, therefore, all cleaning related to vacant erven will be for the account of the property owners. Such cleaning operations may also be contracted out to third parties, meaning that costs may vary considerably from time to time. It would therefore be in the best interests of property owners (especially those who own vacant erven) to protect their properties sufficiently in order to prevent dumping of refuse from other sources.
