The Municipality of Walvis Bay donated five handheld two-way radios valued at more than N$20,000 to the Namibian Police (Erongo Region) in an effort to assist their crime fighting task in the region. Handing over the radios to the regional Police commander, the mayor of Walvis Bay, Uilika Nambahu noted that the Council firmly believes in a unified approach to address common problems.
"We however do not believe that we as a community are helpless in the face of challenges such as crime, poverty and other social challenges provided that we all subscribe to the age old saying that ‘Unity is Strength’. That saying sends a message to everyone that true victory is only possible with unity and that no task can ever be too tough to overcome or too violent to arrest."
She said the Public Private Partnership (PPP) has proven to be a successful method of fighting crime and lawlessness yet requires the commitment of the whole community.
"As a municipality, we believe in contributing, however small to efforts aimed at restoring public order or public good not just because it is the ethical thing to do but also because there is no prosperity for all in a city infested with anarchy and lawlessness. The donation of handheld radios is an initiative from the municipality to increase communication efficiency." She said this would result in quicker response by the Police, and would also send a message to criminals that police reinforcements are only a radio call away.
Erongo Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner Festus Shilongo expressed his gratitude for the donation and said that the Police welcomes such gestures that contribute to “making the region a safer place.” He said radio communication is one of the important factors in dealing with situations of crime effectively. “I would like to congratulate the municipality for their support in our efforts to fight crime in the region. Together we can make the region and Walvis Bay a safer place.”
