Celebrating Radiology
Wednesday, 23 September 2009
"Radiation is useful to our health but equally dangerous if abused." This was said by the Chief Medical Officer of the State Hospital, Dr J Musasa during the celebration of National Radiography Week, yesterday. He said that since the discovery of X-rays in 1895 by Wilhelm Röntgen, radiation in all its forms has contributed tremendously to the diagnoses and treatment of diseases. "The celebration of Radiology is centered on public education as many amongst us are not familiar with medical imaging, its use and the dangers of it abuse."
The Mayor of Walvis Bay echoed similar sentiments adding that radiology and its application in the medical field is undoubtedly one of the most important tools of diagnoses. "The technological leaps of the last few decades in the methods of "seeing" inside the body without surgery, have improved to such advanced extents that if Röntgen were alive today, he would be dumb-founded and awe-struck. The development of other forms of radiation, including magnetic resonance, ultrasound, nuclear medicine etc, have all improved the health and lives of millions of people worldwide. Allow me also to praise the dedicated radiology personnel. Do not underestimate your contribution to the medical wellbeing of each patient that is scanned or X-rayed. Without your expertise in handling the technology and analyzing the images, many people would not be alive or healed today."
Nambahu urged the public to visit the different radiography departments of the hospital to learn more about the technology and to gain first hand information from the medical staff about its use and benefits.
