The Environmental fund of the Municipality of Walvis Bay has invited project proposals from the general public and institutions who would like to implement environmentally driven projects or ideas. The Environmental Fund was created in 2003 and aims to create awareness and involve the community of Walvis Bay in environmental conservation issues.

The fund provides grants to selected projects that will contribute to the proper management of the environment and natural resources within the territorial jurisdiction of the Municipality of Walvis Bay. Some of the previous projects included the Eco-Tourism map for Schools, the Omeya Water Saving Competition for Schools, the beach and culvert clean-up campaigns, the Solid Waste Environmental Information Centre (SWEIC), Walvis Bay Tour Guides and a video about the effects of urbanisation on the environment entitled "A Wake-up Call".

In order to introduce the fund a workshop is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 28 May 2008, at 17:30 at the Kuisebmond Training Centre (Kuisebmond Municipal Offices). The workshop will also provide interested parties with guidelines and information on submitting their project proposals.

Residents or institutions that feel they have an innovative and viable environmental project may apply for a grant. Project proposals should support and be consistent with Municipal management policies, plans and tools. Such projects should in particular:

• support the municipality's "Integrated Environmental Policy"
• be successfully implementable;
• have the capacity for adaptation and replication;
• include local participation, and benefit local groups;
• integrate environmental, social and economic considerations;
• promote sustainability, and
• work towards local environmental enhancement.
