Shack fire survivors receive donations

Posted: 22 Jun 2021

Three families in Kuisebmond were recently left devastated and displaced after a fire ripped through their shacks, destroying virtually all their possessions. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Cllr Trevino Forbes, accompanied by recently crowned Miss Namibia, Chelsi Shikongo and Efraim Kathindi from the Walvis Bay Fire Protection Services paid a visit to these families and other families that were also victims of fire incidents. The families could not salvage much of their belongings, as the fire spread very rapidly and destroyed almost everything in its path.

The Office of the Mayor in collaboration with Miss Namibia, Tunacor and Namibian Red Cross donated relief parcels which contained sanitary pads, basic cosmetics, baby diapers, maize meal, baking flour, sugar, pasta, cooking oil, fish and mattresses to the affected families. “We will assist the residents affected by shack fires, to the best of our ability,” said Cllr Forbes, while consoling a visibly grief-stricken victim. The Mayor also used the opportunity to educate the residents present at the scene about the importance of always wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. Cllr Trevino informed the victims that the Municipality of Walvis Bay Fire Protection Services will clear the land where the shacks were, so that people can be settled there in accordance with the Covid-19 regulations. The Mayor and Miss Namibia proceeded to donate relief parcels to four other families that were also victims of shack fires a number of weeks ago.
