The Municipality of Walvis Bay is pleased to announce that the site at Independence Beach has officially been handed over to the contractor, Larissa Investment CC, supported by consultants Karen Miller Architects, Jordaan & Associates, and Zutari Namibia.
This transformative project is co-financed by the European Union – within the framework of European Commission, and is being jointly implemented by the Municipality of Czerwonak (Poland) and the Municipality of Walvis Bay, with the Development Policy Foundation serving as facilitator.
At the handover, municipal staff, representatives from the contractor and consultants, as well as partners from Poland, gathered at the recreational park to mark this significant milestone.
The Mayor, Cllr. Trevino Forbes, expressed his satisfaction, “I’m happy to see this project finally take shape after some time of trying to get it off the ground. This partnership offers a valuable opportunity to share best practices, and we look forward to more collaboration in future.”
The Mayor also wished the contractor well and urged them to adhere to the set project timelines.
The contractor is currently busy with site establishment, while they expected to commence with construction in the coming days.
COMMUNITY AT THE HEART OF THE PROJECT
In 2023, Council hosted a community consultation where over 200 residents, including children, shared their ideas and input, ensuring the upgraded park reflects the needs of its users.
The current phase focuses on renovating and expanding the recreational space. A future phase will see the construction of a promenade walkway, which has already been designed and forms part of the broader vision for the area.
Residents are hereby informed that the existing recreational space is now an active construction site. Residents are kindly asked to avoid the area and follow safety signage at all times.
Together, we are reshaping our coastline into a vibrant, inclusive, and functional public space for all!
