THE MUNICIPALITY CONTINUES TO ADDRESS ILLEGAL LANDFILL OCCUPATION

Posted: 30 Jul 2025

Efforts to address the ongoing illegal occupation and activities at the municipal landfill site continued this week with a firmly cautionary engagement held on site to warn occupants of impending enforcement actions.

Led by the Manager of Solid Waste and Environmental Management, David Uushona the session reaffirmed the Municipality’s firm stance on unlawful encroachment and outlined the legal steps underway to evict individuals occupying the site illegally. These engagements form part of a broader effort to restore order and ensure the landfill functions solely as a waste management facility.

The municipal team was accompanied by members of the Namibian Police and Immigration officials, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the coordinated approach being taken to enforce compliance.

Uushona reminded occupants that the landfill is not a residential area, nor a trading ground for illegal substances. “There is no justification for illegal activities to continue. There will be no mobile clinics provided. This is not a residential area, it is a dumpsite,” he emphasised. The Municipality has conducted several engagements with individuals occupying the site and issued repeated warnings. However, continued unauthorised presence and continuous disregard for the law at the site remain a concern.

With the Municipality now granted temporary custodianship over the entire landfill site, it is positioned to act more decisively. A formal eviction process is set to commence soon. In the meantime, the task team will conduct regular visits to the site to enforce the law and continue providing public education sessions.

During the operation, two individuals were arrested in connection with copper wire theft, while the issue of minors at the site was also addressed. These developments further highlight the need for urgent intervention and enforcement to restore proper control and safety at the landfill site.

The Municipality remains committed to addressing this matter and will continue to provide updates.
