The Office of the Mayor recently welcomed Dr. Jeketera Khumalo Surgery during a courtesy visit aimed at formally introducing their practice and the important work they are doing within the community. Dr. Jeketera was accompanied by her team, including Mrs. Beatrice Schultz, Ms. Nsala Simbwae, and Ms. Innocentia Nowases.
Dr. Jeketera, an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, is passionate about women’s health, preventative medicine, fertility, pregnancy-related care, and high-risk pregnancies. Since 2021, her practice has been championing free cervical cancer screening campaigns in Walvis Bay, particularly targeting women who do not have the financial means to access such medical services.
With the support of various stakeholders, the team has screened approximately 1 700 women free of charge through HPV testing to better understand the burden of disease within the community. The findings revealed that around 35% of women screened tested positive for HPV, highlighting the urgent need for continued awareness, early detection, and prevention efforts.
Dr. Jeketera emphasized the importance of HPV vaccination, already introduced by the Ministry of Health, as well as continued screening for those already exposed to the virus. She further noted that men can also be screened.
To continue raising awareness and funding for free screenings, another Gala Dinner is planned for:
📍 Municipality Town Hall, Walvis Bay
📅 Saturday, 6 June 2026
🕡 18h30

The event aims to educate the community about cervical cancer, how it is contracted, and how it can be prevented. The Office of the Governor (Erongo Region) has been selected as the patron for the initiative.
His Worship the Mayor expressed his appreciation for the visit and commended the initiative for prioritising community health and empowering women through awareness and access to screening services. He reiterated that the Office of the Mayor remains open to supporting initiatives that improve the wellbeing of residents.
