MAYOR CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION TO PREPARE YOUTH FOR EMERGING INDUSTRIES

The 2026 Erongo Regional Career Fair officially opened today at the Walvis Bay Town Hall, welcoming learners from schools across the Erongo Region to explore a world of career and educational opportunities.

Officially opening the event, His Worship the Mayor, Cllr. Johannes Shimbilinga, emphasized that career fairs are more than exhibitions they are bridges between aspirations and opportunities, connecting young people with employers, training institutions, and industry leaders to help them make informed career choices.

The Mayor encouraged learners to seize every opportunity by asking questions, exploring different career paths, and discovering the qualifications and skills needed to succeed. He highlighted the importance of preparing for emerging industries such as oil and gas and green hydrogen, which are expected to create significant employment opportunities in the region. He urged students to pursue STEM subjects, technical skills, critical thinking, and adaptability to remain competitive in the evolving job market.

He also called on employers, educators, government, parents, and communities to work together in equipping Namibia’s youth with the skills and support needed to build successful careers and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

The two-day career fair in Walvis Bay features a wide range of exhibitors, including Tulipohamba Training & Assessment Institute, Welwitschia University, MTC SPECTRA, Namibia Correctional Service, UNAM, Deep Yellow, Alba Chipamba Training Centre, Triumphant College, NamPower, NAMFI, FNB, NAMCOL, ICAN, Sunshine Private College, and IUM, among others.

The roadshow will continue in Swakopmund from 15–17 July 2026, providing even more learners with the opportunity to engage with institutions and employers.

The Mayor further encouraged learners to participate in the Debmarine Namibia Educorner Programme and the Maritime Art Competition during Maritime Week (28 September – 3 October 2026) to gain greater insight into careers within the maritime sector and the Blue Economy.
