Recognising the important role residents are playing in supporting efforts to curb illegal activities and improve conditions at the Walvis Bay landfill, the Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with the Solid Waste Section, established the Landfill Committee to strengthen cooperation, communication and oversight at the site. During a recent meeting with the Committee, Mayor of Walvis Bay, Councillor Johannes Shimbilinga, applauded and endorsed its efforts and voluntary contribution towards improving management and safety at the landfill.
The Committee consists of residents who spend much of their day at the landfill and have voluntarily committed their time to assist with monitoring and reporting illegal activities, strengthening communication and supporting efforts to maintain order and safety at the site.
To support the Committee in carrying out its role, members were provided with reflector jackets and name tags to make them easily identifiable while carrying out their volunteer duties at the landfill. The identification also supports clearer communication between Committee members, municipal officials, law enforcement and other stakeholders operating at the site.
Residents may have noticed a significant reduction in fire incidents at the landfill, including illegal tyre burning and uncontrolled fires. This has resulted in less smoke and fewer disturbances for surrounding communities, reflecting the positive impact of increased cooperation and vigilance at the site.
The Mayor met with the Committee at the Municipal Chamber to review the progress made, strengthen coordination and discuss matters requiring municipal attention. He commended the members for taking the initiative to volunteer their time and play an active role in addressing challenges at the landfill.
The Mayor emphasised the importance of responsibility, discipline, accountability and teamwork in sustaining the improvements achieved.
“We are seeing positive results because of improved communication and cooperation. Let us maintain this standard of responsibility,” the Mayor stated.
The Committee will continue to assist with monitoring activities, communication, notices and updates, while working closely with the police on matters relating to illegal activities and incidents occurring at the site.
The Mayor encouraged the Committee to continue engaging constructively and to remain committed to supporting a cleaner, safer and better-managed landfill.
The Municipality emphasises that the Landfill Committee forms part of temporary measures being implemented to improve conditions and maintain order at the site. Council continues to work closely with other stakeholders and relevant national authorities on broader measures aimed at restoring order and addressing the challenges at the landfill.
