MAYOR CALLS ON RESIDENTS TO ENCOURAGE YOUTH TO APPLY FOR CLIMATE ACTION FUNDING

Mayor Cllr Johannes Shimbilinga has called on residents to encourage their children and young people in their communities to take advantage of opportunities available through the Youth Climate Action Fund.
Speaking during the Municipality of Walvis Bay’s second series of public meetings, Mayor Shimbilinga highlighted the funding opportunity available to young people between the ages of 15 and 24, who are invited to submit innovative ideas for environmental and climate-related projects.
The Youth Climate Action Fund provides funding of between N$20,000 and N$80,000 for youth-led projects focused on addressing environmental and climate-related challenges.
Residents were informed that Walvis Bay has been the only town in Namibia to successfully secure this funding for the past three years. The town initially received a grant of US$50,000 and later secured US$100,000 after successfully implementing 12 community projects.
The Municipality’s success has also resulted in international recognition and provided local youth with opportunities to participate in exchange programmes in the United States. These opportunities have exposed young people to new experiences while supporting personal growth, leadership development and potential scholarship opportunities.
Mayor Shimbilinga urged parents, schools, churches, youth organisations and the broader community to actively encourage young people to apply and turn their ideas into projects that can make a positive difference in Walvis Bay.
The application deadline has been extended to 5 September 2026, giving young people additional time to submit their ideas.
Young people are encouraged to use this opportunity to develop projects focused on areas such as environmental conservation, renewable energy, urban greening, recycling and climate resilience, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for Walvis Bay.
